Momentum is a funny thing. I've found that in my life, it is easier to stop momentum than to create it. I had great ideas (or so I thought) but very few of them came to fruition until I began the long process of identifying the 'momentum killers' in my life that kept me from reaching closer to my potential.
When I realized that the primary interference for my life’s momentum was a vertical and internal one (rather than a horizontal and external one), I moved closer to becoming who I am called to be by beginning with Christ as my central point of reference.
When Jesus said. “The thief comes to rob, kill and destroy, but I have come that you may have life, and that to the full”, I learned that he wasn’t just talking about getting my ticket punched so I could experience Heaven when I die. Life to the full, the way the Apostle John remembered Jesus’ words, is about the here and now that we experience in growing more fully into a life of goodness and gratitude to God.
Get Moving Again...
The Apostle Paul identifies this kind of living as producing things within us as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. Pursuing these things is not about chasing some form of character development or self-help path, but it is coming to an understanding that God allows and fosters these things—which Paul called the Fruit of the Spirit—to be developed within us as we let go of—and allow God to remove—the momentum killers that we fashion by our own design.
Realizing God's Goodness
My life has been full. My wife and I have been best friends and happily married for over thirty years. We've had the privilege to raise four children to adulthood and watched them both flourish and struggle on their own as they've grown in their own resiliency and identities in God. We have three beautiful grandchildren and look forward to growing and deepening our relationships with them.
My resumé reads like a mosaic. Culinary and restaurant management until I was 27, interlaced with residential construction, heating and cooling installation… all the while assisting as a volunteer youth worker at my home church mentoring teens and developing leaders, before I was called to serve at a local assembly as the youth pastor while I wrapped up my undergrad degree.
After receiving my Bachelor of Theology in Pastor Ministries in 2002, I continued in my ministry as an associate pastor to youth. Over the course of 22 years, I served full-time at three churches developing my own skills as I also led and equipped future leaders. Part of my duties was to direct and oversee a multi-church camp program, vision-cast and develop a community outreach basketball league for youth and children, orchestrate and plan numerous overseas and local mission trips and service projects, and pour into students and adult leaders on a personal level.
In 2020, I relocated my gifting with the purpose of impacting others into a position at a residential treatment facility for teenage boys. Using the same intentionality, my gifts were recognized and utilized as I also led and trained my teammates, while also supporting and encouraging my supervisors. I continue to lead groups that cover a wide range of topics—from addiction, positivity, self-reflection, mindfulness practices, problem-solving, and self-awareness—twice a week.
In early 2024, I was diagnosed with an early-stage—yet aggressive—form of cancer. In addition to pursuing traditional and naturopathic medicine for treatment, my continual quest for personal growth in all areas of my life means that I am challenged to put what I teach all the more into personal practice.
